Illi Gardner

Reigning national champion Illi Gardner made a winning start to her 2023 hill-climb season at the new Bridgwater CC climb of Crowcombe Hill in Somerset, while former national champion Ed Laverack was fastest male over the 1.2-kilometre climb in the Quantock Hills on Saturday.

Gardner (Wahoo Le Col) covered the climb in 4-54.3 to win the women’s category by a convincing 1-20 from Olivia French (Stolen Goat RT), with third in that category going to Wellington Wheelers’ rider Vikki Voysey who was another 32 seconds back.

Laverack (Backpedal) stopped the clock in 4-16.1 to win overall by 9.5 seconds from Ben Millar (Primera TeamJobs) with third being Bristol Road Club’s top junior rider Harvey Thomas who was another 11.7 seconds back.

While Thomas was fastest junior, other category winners include Richard Cartland (HuntBikeWheels.com) who was fifth overall and fastest over-40 veteran, while top over-50 was Steve Thomas (Bristol Road Club) in 4-55.7.

Fastest over-60 was Exeter Wheelers’ Kevin Brosnan in 6-49.3.

This next weekend Gardner continues her preparations for a defence of her national championship title with a ride in the Cheltenham and County CC climb of Bushcombe Lane, a 0.76-mile climb near Winchcombe.

And Laverack is aiming to tackle the Mid-Devon CC climb of Haytor near Bovey Tracey on Saturday, followed the next Saturday by VC Cumbria’s climb of the Whinlatter Pass and the Welsh Championships on October 8 on the Tumble near Abergavenny.
