After a hiatus of a year, the Fareham Wheelers CC Spring TT was back on Saturday. It was a double celebration for the organising team as their riders occupied all three steps of the podium with Gary Chambers winning.

There were 57 who started out of the original list of 64 on a bright dry afternoon with light southerly winds and a temp of 12 but cooling to nine for the later starters.

The course was in good condition but it's a challenging one with a mile and a quarter climb up Portsdown hill in the middle.

The top seeded rider and strong favourite James Boyman did not start leaving the way clear for a strong Fareham Wheelers performance.

That’s exactly how it played out with Gary Chambers winning in 21.45, James Copeland second with a 21.43 and Paul Ashley completing a one-two-three for the organising club and therefore the team prize with a time of 22.08. All three beat the existing course record.

In the veterans on standard competition, Paul Jackson (Team Bottrill) won it with 22.22, Paul Ashley was second and third was Sarah Matthews (A3crg).

Paul Jackson was also fourth overall. It was good to see a lady on the veteran podium proving that the VTTA standards are working for them.

In the road bike category, the first four were Sebastian Ader (A3crg), Simon Healey (Andover Wheelers), Darryl Rice (South Down Bikes) and Neil Mackley (Fareham Wheelers CC) with times of 23.38, 24.45, 24.53 and 25.10 respectively.

Fareham Wheelers are committed to promoting the road bike competition in order to make the sport more accessible to those who cannot afford the exotic TT equipment or simply do not want to go there.

In female competition, the overall winner was Karina Bowie (Team Bottrill) and Sarah Matthews (A3crg) was runner up with times of 25.29 and 25.48.

The female road bike competition honours went to Kirsty Mcseveney (Fareham Wheelers CC) with debutant Abbie Manley (Solent Pirates) second. Their times were 29.49 and 30.53.

In the under 18 category, rising stars James Brickell (Fareham Wheelers CC) and Vaughan Marris were first and second with times of 23.30 and 23.59.

If James had chosen to use one of the club's disc wheels he would have certainly been in the top five.

Finally, the under 18 girls category was won by Caitlin Peters (iTeam). She was also third female overall; her time was 26.23 Second was Abbie Manley (Solent Pirates). Third was another Fareham Wheelers CC rising star Izzy Brickell with a time of 32.05.
