Anabell Orenz

Anabell Orenz and Sam Lindsay were fastest female and male riders respectively as Team Tor 2000 staged a hill-climb on West Close Hill near Priddy in Somerset on Saturday.

Orenz, the 37-year-old North Cotswold CC rider from Northleach in Gloucestershire, covered the course in 6-55.3 to win the women’s prize by 5.5 seconds from Joanne Jago (Performance Cycles), while Lauren Johnston (Avid Sport) was third fastest woman.

Meanwhile, Bristol-based 26-year-old Lindsay (73 Degrees CC-WestSide Coaching) clocked 5-23.9 to win by almost 15 seconds from Joe Norledge (Bristol South CC), while Phil Stonelake (Bristol RC) was another two seconds back in third.

The course starts in Westfield Lane and gains 172 metres as riders climb up to the finish near Broad Lane junction, a distance just short of two kilometres.

A paramedic with the South West Ambulance Service, Lindsay’s victory in the latest in a string of good results. He was third in the Welsh Hill-Climb Championships last Sunday and won the University of Bristol CC’s climb the previous day.

In the first weekend of October he was second in both the Severn RC and Chippenham and District Wheelers climbs, while he was also runner-up in four previous hill-climbs this season, all in the south west area.

He was due to ride the Bristol South CC climb of Burrington Combe on Sunday, and is also entered for the National Championships near Sheffield next weekend.

Orenz has enjoyed good form this hill-climb season. She was fastest female in events staged by Newbury Road Club and Severn Road Club earlier this month, and also won hill climbs held by Chew Valley CC and Stratford CC in September.

She was second to Jago in the Bath CC climb last weekend, as well as finishing second to Kate Mactear in the University of Bristol event last Saturday.

After riding the Oxford University CC climb on Sunday at Wytham, she will then tackle the National Championships next Sunday on Pea Royd Lane near Stocksbridge.
