Tom Rigby (Springfield Financial RT) broke the 15-year-old course record as he powered to victory in the Circuit of Greystoke Forest, promoted by Border City Wheelers near Penrith in Cumbria on Saturday.
The 28-year-old from Chorley in Lancashire clocked 49.45 to beat the old record held by Mark Atkinson since 2002 by 1-51 on a superb day, with wall to wall sunshine and only a light north-westerly breeze.
Also breaking the old record was runner-up Richard Bickley (Border City Wheelers) who clocked 51.13, while third spot went to Dillon Byrne (VCUK Velochampion) who was 2-09 behind Rigby’s pace.
Fastest female was the promoting club’s Carol Westmorland, the 48-year-old clocking 1:05.36 to win the women’s category by 2-36 from Jan Scotchford (North Lancs RC).
There was also a strong performance from 18-year-old Tom Roper, the Beacon Wheelers rider who finished fourth fastest with 52.45, while the fastest veteran was Paul Braithwaite (Pendle Forest CRC), the 41-year-old covering the course in 54.49 for seventh overall.
For Rigby, it is just the latest in a string of victories so far in what is turning out to be a successful 2017.
He won last month’s Nelson Wheelers 10, and was also victorious in the Kent Valley RC 10 and Border City Wheelers 29 in May. Prior to that, he won the Kent Valley hill-climb on May 1 as well as the Barrow Central Wheelers 21 in April.
