Ryan Perry (Langdale Lightweights RT) came from behind to sneak victory by three seconds in the National 25 Championship in Norfolk on Sunday.
The 100-mile national champion was pushed much closer in retaining the 25-mile title he won last year with a time of 46 minutes and 31 seconds.
The blustery and hot conditions on the A11 out and back course between Wymondham near Norwich and Thetford would play a big role in deciding this year's title.
With 10 miles remaining Richard Bussell (AeroCoach) was six seconds ahead of his rival before a head wind final sector which saw Perry reverse the deficit into a winning margin.
“I was a bit surprised to learn I had won and I just couldn't believe it,” said Perry following the victory.
“There was quite a lot of traffic on the road which did get in the way at the roundabouts. It was fast going out to the turn but coming back it was really hard.”
Bussell narrowly missed out on following in the footsteps of team-mate Hayley Simmonds who won the women's event yesterday on a different course.
A close battle also took place for bronze which Kieron Davies (drag2zero) clinched in 47.47 some nine seconds quicker than Matt Clinton (Mike Vaughan Cycles).
Davies also finished in bronze in last year's 25 championship clocking 48.36 on that occasion.
The winning team was Team Bottrill whose members John Dewey, Matthew Smith and Jonathan Parker all finished in the top 20 overall recording a combined time of 2 hours 26 minutes and 41 seconds.
