Marcel Schubert (Darlington Cycling Club) and Emma Matthews (Sowerby Sunday Club) took clear victories in the men’s and women’s events respectively at the Teesdale CRC (Sporting) 20.7.

Schubert, aged 40, took 11 victories last season and opened his account for 2022 clocking a winning time of 45 minutes and 14 seconds which was over two minutes clear of his nearest rival.

The sporting test took place between Darlington and Barnard Castle in the North East starting and finishing near Staindrop.

Riders completed a smaller starting loop followed by a straight leg down to Winston before heading across to Piercebridge and then the final leg back to the finish.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic it was the first time the early season test has been held since 2019 when Shaun Tyson (Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling) won in 47-27.

Schubert won a range of events from 10 to 100 miles last season and showed his versatility again over the sporting terrain to take victory.

Fellow veteran Rob Carter (Cleveland Wheelers CC) led the chase behind on a road bike taking second in 47-37 while fellow category rider Wilson-Jay Brown (PM Racing UK) finished third (49-27).

Quickest junior was Kieran Brownless, from host club Teesdale CRC, who completed the course in a time of 1-00-20.

In the women’s event Matthews put in an impressive rider of 53-37 which was good enough for eighth place overall and a clear women’s winner.

After having her first open time trial season last year Matthews had an impressive first outing of 2022 finishing over eight minutes clear of her nearest challenger.

Host club rider Naomi Palmer led the battle for second with her time of 1-01-54 a minute and one second quicker than juvenile Sophie Heighton (Ferryhill Wheelers).
