Andrew Duggan and Sarah Wilkinson were fastest male and fastest female respectively at the GS Metro 26-mile time trial on Saturday morning.

Duggan, riding for Muckle CC, finished in 58-28 to hold off pre-event favourite and scratchman Lewis Timmins by just 10 seconds, with the Vector Racing rider clocking 58-38 over a challenging 26-mile hilly course, while Adam Smith (Kirkley Cycles) was third in 1-00-30.

There was a first win in the women’s event for Wilkinson (Blaydon CC) in 1-10-20, helping her achieve a 2-18 cushion over of Jadan-Vive Le Velo’s Jen McMahon who set a time of 1-12-38 to finish ahead of third-placed Lois Jarvis (North Tyneside Riders CC) in 1-18-00.

The 42-strong field enjoyed warm and favourable conditions which helped riders post some fast times at the Andy Mallen Memorial event.

After winning his first time trial of the season, Duggan will hope to build on this in his next planned event at Tyneside Vagabonds CC 47-mile time trial on May 22.

Today’s route, on course M26, starts at Belsay just north of the junction with the A696 and B6524, before proceeding north via Bolam Lake to a right turn onto the B6343 through Hartburn to Dyke Neuk, then turning left to Rothley Crossroads, left again to Scots Gap before turning on B6343 and finishing opposite the start line.
