Michael Gill and Anna Weaver earned the fastest man and fastest female accolades at the Team Kirkley Cycles 10-mile time trial in Northumberland on Saturday morning.
Saint Piran rider Gill recorded a time of 19-55 to finish ahead of Lewis Timmins (Vector Racing) who finished in 21-08, while Adam Smith from the host club was third in 21-43.
In the women’s event Weaver, competing on a road bike, finished in 25-14 to beat Sarah Wilkinson of Blaydon CCC by just four seconds, while Weaver’s clubmate Claire Harlow clocked 25-59.
The 10-mile route, held on course M105, starts near the Northumbria Police HQ at Ponteland on the unclassified road from to Morpeth then proceeds northeast to Kirkley Hall before turning left to the T-junction in Ogle then heads to Belsay, passing Ogle Hill Head Farm and Whalton then continues south towards Ponteland, finishing opposite Dissington Lane just before Ponteland.
Gill, 23, was delighted with his performance on the course.
“It was a nice morning for time trialling – a bit windy but the course is pretty sheltered,” he said.
“I wasn’t sure how I’d feel after suffering injuries from a few crashes in France last week so I was pleased to take the course record and get under 20 minutes. A big thank you to Team Kirkley Cycles for organising another great event”.
Weaver said: “I was very pleased to take the win today and also to see my Team Kirkley Cycles team-mates. Training has been going well under my coach Nick Yarworth, so I look forward to building on that as the season progresses”.
