Lewis Wake led a one-two for Team Kirkley Cycles in the Barnesbury CC/Velo Culture 10, while team-mate Joanne Rea completed a double by winning the women’s event by nearly three minutes.

Scratch rider Wake, who turned 26 earlier in the week, marked his birthday with a second win of the season clocking a time of 19 minutes and 47 seconds over the 10-mile course.

The M101 is considered one of the fastest in the district with riders starting near Cramlington and joining the A189 up to North Seaton and then making the return journey in a traditional out and back course.

Despite the course being a fast one the cold and breezy conditions meant that everybody had to settle for slower times.

The event was a charity event to raise money for the Royal British Legion.

Wake was competing in his first 10-mile event of the season after winning the Border City Whs hilly event over 13.5 miles last month.

Joanne Rea.

On his last outing on the M101 Wake recorded 19-03 on his way to third in the Zeus CRT last May, despite going slower in tough conditions on this occasion his time was enough for victory by 45 seconds.

Julian MacBride made it a one-two for Team Kirkley Cycles winning a close battle for second in 20-32 finishing just three seconds faster than Jay Pitt (Velo Culture).

Finishing in fifth place overall the fastest veteran on scratch was Phil Hall (Velo Culture) 20-52 while team-mate Harris Hall was fastest juvenile in 21-30.

Fastest rider on a road bike was Lee Cuthbertson (Muckle CC) whose time of 21-48 was good enough for 13th place overall.

Spindata had predicted that Wake would have been the fastest of the starters in 19-26 but in the cold conditions he was slower than that mark by 21 seconds.

“The M101 has always been a favourite course for me so I’m really pleased to take the win in another big field in this North East TT,” said Wake.

Not to be outdone, Rea, also of Team Kirkley Cycles led the charge in the women’s event clocking a winning time of 23-50.

Rea was also successful on her last outing winning the Barnesbury CC 21 and continued her winning form on his occasion.

A close battle for second saw Lois Jarvis (North Tyneside Riders CC) clock 26-37 which was 18 seconds quicker than Fleur Stoops (TORQ Performance).

Spindata predicted a victory for Rea who also struggled with the cold conditions with her finishing time of 23-50 slower than the 21-42 predicted.
Rea said: “It will take some time to get warmed up after this morning’s race – my legs are still burning with the cold!

“Due to the coldness of the day, I definitely didn’t have the best of pre-race warm-ups, so I have to settle for my time being down. My power was still up, so that is pleasing.”
