Jake Sargent

Jake Sargent (FTP Fulfil the Potential Race Team) stormed to victory by over four minutes in the Swindon Road Club & Swindon Wheelers time trial, while Stephanie Clutterbuck (FTP RC) won the women’s event.

Temporary traffic lights on the course meant the proposed 31-mile event was shortened to 27.5 miles.

That and tough weather conditions didn’t deter Sargent who was the only rider to dip under the hour with a winning time of 58 minutes and 40 seconds.

The traffic lights meant that the start near Lower Seagry was moved 2.5 miles north towards Great Somerford.

Riders then completed an out and back leg of the B4042 before continuing east to Royal Wootton Bassett.

Competitors then completed a loop back to Malmesbury before a tough final section into a headwind and cross-headwind to the finish at Upper Seagry.

Wet conditions met riders for the start with some puddles on the course which dried out during the morning.

Sargent, aged 22, from Almondsbury, won seven open events last year and opened his account for 2022 at last month’s Chippenham & District Wheelers 22.

He took his second victory in emphatic style recording an average speed of over 31.7 miles per hour.

Robert Francis (Pronto Bikes) led the battle for second in 1-02-52 while Josh Griffiths (FTP Fulfil the Potential Race Team) finished third (1-05-06).

Fastest veteran on scratch was Tony Chapman (Frome and District Wheelers) who finished fourth overall a further 21 seconds back (1-05-27).

After finishing sixth in the National 100-mile Championships last season Clutterbuck began her 2022 season with victory in the women’s event.

The 27-year-old clocked a winning time of one hour, 11 minutes and 38 seconds which was an average of over 25.9 miles per hour.

Marianne Day (Swindon Wheelers) finished second in 1-20-33 while Isabelle McNally (Westbury Wheelers) finished third (1-23-08).
