Sam Brown

Sam Brown (6AM Cycling) took victory by exactly a minute in the Eastern Counties Cycling Association 50, while Jennifer George (The Independent Pedaler – Nopinz) was a convincing winner in the women’s event.

The event was also the ECCA Championship 50 and Brown, aged 38, won the Beauchamp trophy in a winning time of one hour, 40 minutes and one second.

In the women’s event George, aged 39, was a convincing winner knocking over seven minutes off her previous personal best in a winning time of 1-47-44.

Last season George finished third in the National-50 Mile Championships in 1-54-42 but she smashed that time showing her intent for later this season.

The F2/50 saw riders complete four circuits of 12.5 miles on A428 between Cambridge and Cambourne.

Some 82 riders faced the start on a warm and sunny afternoon with just a mild westerly wind blowing from the turn at Caxton Gibbet to the turn at Madingley, making for equal conditions throughout the event.

There were lots of happy faces around the results board as 24 improvements on personal bests were recorded.

Fastest of them all was Brown who knocked over two-and-a-half minutes off his personal best time to take his first win of the season.

Veteran Paul Pardoe (Peterborough CC) was an early started but won a narrow battle for second finishing exactly a minute behind in 1-41-01 and was quickest veteran on scratch.

Scratch rider Liam Maybank (Twickenham CC) won the Maidenhead & District 15 earlier in the season but had to settle for third this time out a further seven seconds back (1-41-08).

Peterborough CC won the team prize with Paul Pardoe (1-41-01), Malcolm Smith (1-45-26) and Philip Jones (1-57-39) all combining.

In the women’s event George took her third victory from as many events this season in fine style finishing almost five minutes clear of her nearest competitor.

Quickest veteran rider Sally Turner (trainSharp) finished second on this occasion in 1-49-18 while a tight battle for third saw Laura Davies (Orwell Velo) finish in 1-52-37 which was just 11 seconds quicker than Anastasia Bowler (AS Test Team) in 1-52-48.
