Helen Goldthorpe and Richard Sharpe were the winners at Yorkshire Cycling Federation’s 50-mile time trial held near Boroughbridge on Saturday.
Goldthorpe, the 43-year-old Otley CC rider, clocked 2-14-00 in her first 50-mile effort for a couple of years, giving her the win by more than nine and a half minutes from Nikola Matthews (Halifax Imperial Wheelers), while another minute and a half back was Laura Warburton (South Shields Velo).
And in the men’s event Sharp, 39 and from Hayton near York, clocked 1-46-14 to set a new mark for the seldom used V150 variant of the course, and take victory by more than three minutes from Hayden Allen (PMRR) with 1-49-23 while Ross Walton (GS Metro) was just 17 seconds back in third spot.
This was Sharps’s second open time trial victory on record so far in 2021, coming after he was also victorious in the Vive le Velo 10 last month.
But he has never placed outside the top ten so far this season, and was runner-up in the Drighlington BC 25 last month as well as the Selby CC 10 in June and the Vive le Velo and VTTA Yorkshire 25-mile events in April.
Following this event, Sharp was due to take part in the Dukinfield CC 50-mile event on Sunday, and will be going even further in a few weeks having entered the National 12-hour Championships on August 1.
For Goldthorpe this is her second victory of 2021, having won the East Bradford CC 15-mile event in May. Prior to that she had finished on the podium twice so far this season, with second in the Bramley Wheelers 10 in April as well as third in the Selby CC 10 in May.
After tasting this success she will be looking for more of the same fast times next weekend when she rides the Yorkshire Road Club 25 on Saturday and the Otley CC 10 on Sunday.
The V150 course uses the A168 former A1, although isn’t the fastest version of the course. Early dampness soon dried up on the day, with many riders pleased with their times.
In other categories Richard Dean was best veteran 40-49 with 1-51-07 for fourth overall, while fastest 50-59 was Valley Striders’ Mike Furby with 1-59-14.
The over-60s prize went to David Taylor of Ravensthorpe CC in 2-08-16, while the fastest over-70 was Yorkshire Road Club’s Steven Woodrup in 21-25-16.
