Under-23 rider Ben Turner (Dinnington RC) continued to show his talent by breaking the course record on his way to winning the Rossington Wheelers 10, while Beth Grogan (Selby CC) won the women’s event.
Turner, aged 22 and from Doncaster, clocked a winning time of 19 minutes and three seconds – breaking the course record of 19-06 held by professional World Tour road rider Connor Swift.
Professional cyclo-cross rider Turner is usually at his best in the winter conditions, but despite a blisteringly hot afternoon in Yorkshire he rose to the challenge.
““It was good, it was a hot day but it was nice,” said Turner.
“I wanted to get the record and go sub 19 minutes, I’m good friends with Connor [Swift] and I knew it would annoy him. I live in the next village from the turn so it’s very local.
“I next go to the Tour Alsace and Tour de l'Avenir which is also really hot so it was good to get a little hit out in the heat.
“It was nice, I quite like the heat but it was quite hot in the full time trial suit and helmet. I’ve fixed my position up a bit so it was good to try it out in a smaller race before I go to the bigger ones so to get the record was quite nice.”
The out and back course saw riders start near Hatfield Woodhouse before competing on the A614 down to Blaxton before making the return journey.
Riders were helped by still conditions, unusual for the course, and the resurfaced road section outside the Linholme prison.
Turner placed fourth in last year’s Tickhill Velo Club 10 on the same course clocking 20-01 but went almost a minute quicker on this occasion.
Scratch rider Adam Duggleby (Chapeau! Vive Le Velo) was looking for his 11th individual victory this season but was well beaten on this occasion finishing 35 seconds down in 19-38.
Quickest veteran rider Neal Parkin (Team Bottrill) completed the top three positions in 20-55 just four seconds faster than fastest veteran aged 60-70 Keith Ainsworth (Sheffrec CC) who stopped the clock in 20-59.
Conditions were so hot that numerous riders struggled, and several riders did not finish purely due to the heat.
After winning the Drighlington BC 10 last month Beth Grogan (Selby CC) again took top spot in the women’s category posting a winning time of 25-01.
She was pushed all the way by veteran Jo Corbett (Sherwood CC) who finished just 30 seconds down on this occasion in 25-31, while Amanda Dean (West Hull Ladies) finished third in 27-19.
