Alexander MacRae (Velopreda) marked the return of racing to Scotland with victory in the VC Glasgow South 10, while Jennifer George (The Independent Pedaler – Nopinz) won the women’s event.
The 21-year-old last raced in August 2019 but with lockdown restrictions allowing competition in Scotland again he returned to racing with a winning time of 22 minutes and seven seconds in tough conditions.
The WW10/02 course saw riders start outside Maidenhill on the outskirts of Glasgow before traveling out and back on the challenging A77 course which runs alongside the M77.
The tough course terrain was made more difficult by a strong and gusting headwind out to the turn.
Despite riders enjoying a tailwind home, it was not thought enough to allow lost time to be recouped.
MacRae’s winning time of 22-07 was over a minute down on one he set in 2019 and nearly two and a half minutes behind the course record of 19-41 set by John Archibald in 2018.
However, it was MacRae’s first win since the Velopreda 7 back in August 2018.
The battle for second could not have been closer with William Bonar (GTR - Return To Life) and veteran Hans Forhaug (Glasgow United CC) both clocking 22-12.
The fight for the podium places also saw Torvelo Racing pair Luke Maguire (22-15) and Ryan Bunyan (22-17) fall just short of the podium positions.
Forhaug was also quickest veteran on scratch beating Marc Anderson (GTR - Return To Life) into second (22-23) and Jason Roberts (Vanelli-Project GO) in third (22-41).
Quickest junior was Craig Paterson (East Kilbride Road Club) whose time of 22-49 was good enough for a top-10 placing overall.
Meanwhile, para-cyclist Steven Currie (Glasgow Ivy CC) posted a time of 31-22.
After taking bronze in last weekend’s National Circuit Championships, George was a convincing winner in the women’s event with her time of 23-21 good enough for 16th overall.
George, aged 38, had clocked a 21-15 earlier this season on her way to winning the Catford CC 10 earlier this season.
On this occasion George beat veteran Patricia Baird (Ecosse Performance Cycling Coaching) into second (26-17) while Alexandra Ligeti (Vanelli-Project GO) placed third (26-49).
Quickest junior woman was Miriam Gilbride (Pro Endurance Coaching) who posted 27-36.
The event also incorporated the National Youth Championships Scotland.
Juvenile rider Rhys Edwards (Edinburgh Road Club) took victory posting a winning time of 23-15 with an average speed of 25.8 miles per hour.
Junior Rory Spencer (East Kilbride Road Club) finished second in 23-58 while juvenile Sam Edgar (Johnstone Wheelers) completed the top three in 24-29.
