Josh Charlton and Joanne Rea broke course records for men and women respectively as they powered to victories at the GS Metro 26-mile time trial in Northumberland on Saturday.

Charlton, 18 and from Durham, clocked 56-43 in the colours of MTS Cycle Sport to take the win by an impressive 2-24 from veteran Carl Donaldson (GS Metro), while Graham Crammond (Vector Racing) took third, another 50 seconds back.

A prolific winner of time trials in the region, 33-year-old Blaydon CC rider Rea clocked 1-07-30 to win by more than three minutes from second best woman Jen McMahon (Sub Rosa), while Rea’s team-mate at Blaydon CC Rachel Galler covered the course in 1-13-50 for third in the women’s category.

After his win, Charlton said: “I was pretty ecstatic when I found out I'd gotten the win as well as the course record, definitely a confidence booster heading into the rest of the season.

“You never know how the first race of the season will go, especially during these Covid times so I wasn't sure how I was going to do.

“Initially in my warm-up I felt pretty bad so I just took the first couple of kilometres fairly steady and rode myself into the course instead of chasing the pain. I just kept on feeling better and better with every pedal stroke.

“The course itself provided some motivation, I love the TTs up here with the climbs and technical sections.”

Starting near Belsay in Northumberland, the M26 course sees riders head north on minor roads to Scots Gap, where they head round an anti-clockwise loop through Hartburn and Longwitton before heading back south to the finish.

Among the other riders taking part was 81-year-old Joe Applegarth, the Durham Triathlon Club rider who clocked an impressive 1-43-04.

Charlton will be aiming to continue his good form when he rides the Zeus CRT 10 on May 16.

For Rea this was the Prudhoe-based rider’s third open time trial win of the season so far, coming after victories at the North Tyneside Riders 10 and Barnesbury CC 10 last month.

She is expected to ride the Derwentside CC 40-mile event next Sunday and has also entered the Zeus CRT 10 the following weekend.
