Veteran Matthew Smith (Drag2Zero) and Hayley Simmonds (CAMS Racing) made their final preparations for this weekend’s National Circuit Championships by taking the men’s and women’s victories at the Cambridge CC 15.
Smith, aged 43, took his first victory of the season in a new course record of 27 minutes and 44 seconds.
Meanwhile Simmonds, aged 32, was just three seconds off the women’s competition record finishing the course in 29-51.
The F2/15 course was new in 2019 but suffered with strong wind conditions that year and then was Covid-cancelled in 2020.
The course is on the fast and flat A428 dual carriageway just west of Cambridge with just over one lap of the out and back course to complete.
The wind direction was not ideal for the course but despite this fast times were recorded.
Smith finished second in the Leo 30 earlier in May but went one better on this occasion finishing 47 seconds clear of his nearest challenger.
Next weekend Smith will be looking to improve on his eighth place in last season’s National Circuit Championships.
George Fox (George Fox Cycling Solutions) placed second in 28-31 while Paul Burton (Paceline RT) finished third (28-57).
The quickest team was Cambridge University with the winning side consisting of Jack Kellam (29-44), Patrick Elwood (30-05) and Euan Tebbutt (31-08).
Smith also headed up the veterans on standard results, setting a new age 43 national record (+11.53).
Andy Grant (Cambridge CC) was second veteran on standard with a +11.37 ahead of Jackie Field (CC Ashwell) in third (+11.19).
More VTTA National records were set by Tim Hood (60), Andy Grant (68), Jackie Field (56), Jennifer Clegg (67), Glen Taylor/Mark Arnold (99), Andrew & Catherine Hutchinson (114) and John Swanbury/Kate Churchill (136)
Quickest junior Mattie Dodd (Team Backstedt Bike Performance) would have recorded a convincing new Junior record had he not had a late start and briefly gone off course eventually finishing seventh in 29-51.
Glenn Taylor (Shorter Rochford RT) and Mark Arnold (VTTA East Anglia) were the fastest tandem clocking 28-23.
Meanwhile, Andrew Hutchinson and Catherine Hutchinson (Lowestoft Wheelers CC) were fastest veterans on standard in +8:38.
Simmonds, from Bar Hill, Cambridgeshire, won the Aerocoach 10 for road bikes on her only other time trial outing this season.
Next weekend she will be hoping to improve on her third place in last year’s National Circuit Championships.
On this occasion Simmonds finished three minutes and 35 seconds clear of her nearest challenger.
Veteran Jackie Field (CC Ashwell) was second fastest female in 33-21, while Fiona Sharp (Chapeau! Vive Le Velo) had to settle for second on this occasion in 33-26.Meanwhile, Verity Smith (Loose Cannon’s Conditioning) finished third a further minute back in 34-29.
