Jake Sargent (FTP Racing) took victory in the Chippenham & District Wheelers 25-mile time trial, while Charlotte Davies (FTP Racing) claimed top spot in the women’s event. Both riders set new course records in imperfect conditions.
21-year-old Sargent came out on top with a time of 51:47, five minutes ahead of his nearest rival.
Leading the competition was team-mate Michael Davis (FTP Racing) who finished the course in 56:50, and following him was David Bolton (Bristol South CC), who rode the 25 miles in 56:53.
In the women’s event it was Charlotte Davies that took top spot, convincingly, with a time of 1:02:37. Following behind was Elizabeth Williams (Stroud Valley Velos) who completed the course in 1:05:39. Completing the podium was Gemma Waterjohns (Somerset Road Club), she clocked in at 1:08:45.
Conditions were windy, with the roads drying as the morning progressed after early drizzle. A nearby sportive had signage across the course, perhaps giving an advantage to any riders who knew this particular course well.
Sargent had ridden eight times so far this season, finishing on the podium for seven of those and failing to make the podium only once. Of those eight rides he won three of them, making that four, courtesy of this victory. His last victory came at the VC Bristol 10-mile event in July.
Davies has ridden competitively in open events twice since the beginning go June, in the most recent of those she finished second in the earlier mentioned VC Bristol 10-mile event. The event before that was also a second placed finish. Bringing that momentum into this event was enough to move her one place up to finally take top spot.
The fastest veteran on the day was David Bolton, who was third overall, while Tony Chapman (Frome & District Wheelers) was second. While Bolton was the fastest over-50 the prize went to Rob Pears (Bath CC) under the one rider one prize rule, while Mike Anderson (CC Moncontour) took home the over-60s prize with 1-03-27.
