Danny Smith

Danny Smith (Holohan Coaching RT) took victory at his first attempt over the 25 miles distance in the South Pennine RC 25, while Joanna Patterson (Pro Endurance Coaching) took the women’s win by over six minutes.

Smith finished fourth in the Coalville Wheelers 10 on his last outing in April but went better on this occasion winning in a time of 49 minutes and 55 seconds.

Early rain showers during the morning cleared in time for the start of the South Pennine RC 25 near Derby.

Traffic was light as the day improved with a rising southerly wind as riders competed out and back course on the A50 between Etwall and Uttoxeter.

Early starter Smith was the only rider to go under the 50-minute mark as his 49-55 was 54 seconds faster than his competitors in the battle behind.

Veteran Alan Chorley (Seamons CC) took a season best position and time taking second place in 50-49 ahead of Kamil Waligora (East Lancashire RC) in 51-03.

Joanna Patterson

Ian Guilor (Mapperley CC) was second veteran in 51-40 while Nicholas Cousins (Ilkeston CC) was third in the category (52-14).

In the junior category Rory Knowles (Cero/Cycle Division) recorded a winning time of 54-01.

On her first outing of the season Patterson, who place in the top-six in the National Closed Circuit, 50, 25 and 10 mile Championships, last season showed her early season form winning by over six minutes.

Patterson, aged 32, from Glasgow, clocked a time of 53-23 showing massive improvement from the 55-14 she posted on her way to fifth in last year’s National 25 Championships.

A close battle for second saw Rebecca Liniker (South Normanton C.C) post 59-32 which was nine seconds quicker than leading veteran Sarah Harrison (Sheffield Tri Club) in 59-41.

Sue Cheetham (North Lancashire R.C) was second veteran woman in 1-02-52 while Deborah Sheridan (Warwickshire R.C) was third in 1-04-00.
