Professional riders Ryan Mullen (Trek – Segafredo) and Alice Barnes (Canyon/Sram Racing) stormed to the men’s and women’s victories in the Westmead Team 88 25-mile time trial in Cheshire on Saturday.

Mullen, aged 24, stormed around the Cheshire course in a new course record of 47 minutes and 49 seconds despite average conditions with a slight wind.

The professional rider with Trek – Segafredo is four-time National Champion of Ireland in the time trial discipline.

The J2/9 course saw riders complete one-and-a-half laps of a square shaped course in the Cheshire countryside.

Riders started near Jodrell Bank before joining the A535 towards Chelford before joining the A537 to Ollerton before turning over to Toft and then the A50 back south through the finish.

Competitors then turned for the bottom part of the course at Cranage before cutting over to Twemlow Green and joining the A535 to complete the lap.

Torrential rain made way just 30 minutes before the start of the event to reasonable conditions although poor road surfaces and the twisty nature of the course did slow times.

In his only other Cycling Time Trials open event Mullen won the WCTTCA 10 back in June 2018, clocking 17-49 on that occasion.

Sean Mullen (Port Sunlight Wheelers) won the Manchester Wheelers Hilly 20.5 last month but made way to his older brother on this occasion finishing second in 49-53.

Quickest veteran on scratch was Mat Ivings (Buxton CC/Sett Valley Cycles) who also finished third overall in 53-06.

Meanwhile, in the women’s event professional rider Barnes, aged 25, was taking part in her first Cycling Time Trials open event.

Barnes, from Stockport, has spent the early part of this season road racing in Europe and covered the course in a winning time of 55 minutes and 13 seconds.

Emily Martin (Weaver Valley CC) continues her search for a first win of the season and took second on this occasion in 57-42.

Lucy Rogers (Congleton CC) was quickest veteran woman and covered the course in 59-26 which was good enough for third place overall.
