Red Walters (Sotonia CC) set a new course record on his way to winning the Knights Hill climb against the backdrop of the Goodwood Hills, while Bithja Jones (Pankhurst Cycles) charged to victory in the women’s event.
Walters, aged 21, also won the …a3crg Glorious Goodwood Circuit TT road bikes category in July but this was his first open hill climb win.
A warm day and a strong tailwind helped the under-23 rider on Knights Hill as he flew up the one-mile long climb in a time of two minutes and 52 seconds.
The PHC91 climb starts just outside Charlton with its steepest section of 11.5 per cent at the bottom before evening out for an average gradient of five per cent.
Despite setting a new course record Walters was pushed all the way with Sam Clark (Trainsharp) finishing second just two seconds back in 2-54 while Matthew Houlberg (Meudon Pedal Heaven Le Col RT) completed the podium places in 3-03.
Third places Houlberg was also quickest junior rider ahead of Jonathan Vickers (Blazing Saddles) taking second in 3-19 and Isaac Warrington (Solent Pirates Youth CC) in third (3-38).
Quickest juvenile boy was Matthew Gilmour (Velo Club Venta) in 3.31 ahead of Ollie Boarer (I-Team Cyclists Club) clocking 3-35.
Veteran rider Jones finished a narrow second in last weekend’s Cycle Club Basingstoke HC but went one better in the women’s category with a winning time of 3-44.
Kate Parrish (Lewes Wanderers CC) finished second in 3-54 just two seconds ahead of Mathilde Pauls (1904RT).
Charlotte Smith (Solent Pirates Youth CC) was fastest juvenile girl in 4-35 just two seconds ahead of Grace Park (Valkyrie Race Team) while Freya Hill (Salisbury Road and Mountain CC) completed the podium positions in 6-10.
