Tom Hutchinson and Miriam Jessett were fastest male and female riders respectively, as competitors of all ages remembered well-respected local time trial photographer Jack Earl who passed away earlier in August.
Hutchinson (Team Kirkley Cycles) clocked a new course record of 18-52 on his way to victory in the Northumberland and Durham CA Championships, beating the previous best of Adam Wild of 19-09 set last year when the course was used for the first time.
While Wild was away riding (and winning) and National 100-Mile Championships in Wiltshire, Hutchinson took full advantage to take the win on an overcast and dry but chilly morning near Cramlington, Northumberland.
Hutchinson’s time was just two seconds better than runner-up Michael Gill (Aerolab Ward Wheelz), while junior ace Oscar Onley (Kelso Wheelers) was third overall and was quickest junior.
“I’m delighted to get another open race in the bag, even better with the win, albeit just by 2 seconds with a great ride by Michael Gill,” said Hutchinson.
“One of the quicker courses in the North East, it’s great to see so many riders with phenomenal times including strong performances by my team-mates. Thanks again to the organisers who put on the event in the current circumstances.”
In-form Miriam Jessett secured another win for Team Kirkley Cycles with 23-08, winning by more than a minute from Jen McMahon (Sub Rosa) with Claire Harlow (Blaydon CC) third.
“It was exciting to race on a new course,” said Jessett. “I'd ridden on both the Barnesbury Club 10 and the Open 25 last month. The course proved to be interesting and testing and I'm happy to come away with fastest female, especially in the run up to nationals in a few weeks time.”
Other category winners included Philip Kennell (GS Metro) who was fastest veteran on actual time with 20-38, while the quickest veteran on age standard was Nev Martin (Velo Culture) with 20-54 for a plus of 6-50.
Fastest female veteran was Lindsay Turnbull (Vector Racing) with 24-54, while Joe Dixon (Velo Culture) was best male juvenile with 23-16. Of the female juveniles Sophie Heighton (Ferryhill Wheelers) was best with 27-47, while Blaydon CC’s Joe Leiserach was best on a road bike with 22-06.
