Chris Fennell completed a great weekend for The Independent Pedaler, taking victory in the men’s title race on Sunday morning to add to his colleague Emily Meakin’s win in the women’s event on Saturday.
Fennell clocked 46-07 on a near perfect morning for the championship, with warm, dry and still conditions on quiet roads between Etwall and Uttoxeter.
That gave him the win by 26 seconds from Phil Williams (Liverpool Phoenix CC), while Sigma Sports Classic Series winner Adam Wild (GS Metro) completed the podium with 46-47 for third.
Team winners were Team Bottrill, with James Rix, Daniel Barnett and Keith Dorling making up the victorious trio.
“I had a brilliant ride, I couldn’t have done any more,” said Fennell, 23 and from Canterbury. “I went out to my power target and held it all the way round. There was hardly any traffic and the roundabouts were all clear, so I’m really happy.
“This was the first time I’ve ridden the course. I drove it on Saturday after the women’s event, and I thought it was pretty easy. And with Sunday being a lovely day with not much wind it was perfect, especially early in the morning when we were riding.”
National record holder and reigning National 25-Mile Champion Marcin Bialoblocki was a non-starter, while Adam Duggleby (Vive le Velo) punctured before the turn.
The course takes riders from Etwall to the west of Derby along the A50 and into Staffordshire. They head past the northern fringes of Uttoxeter before turning and retracing.
Like many of the riders in the National 25, Fennell will now turn his attentions to the National 10-Mile Championship next weekend near Six Mile Bottom in Cambridgeshire.
