David Mead (Team Rapid) narrowly missed the course record by two seconds on his way to victory in the Team Bottrill 10 while Lauren Creamer (Brotherton Cycles) won the women’s event.
Mead, aged 43 and from Nuneaton, clocked a winning time of 20 minutes and 24 seconds on the undulating course, just two seconds shy of time trial legend Matt Bottrill’s course record.
Veteran rider Mead adds to numerous victories this year having also won the Brecon RCC 10, Royal Sutton CC 10 and Coventry CC 10.
The A10/34 course sees riders start outside Griffydam with a fast, slightly downhill start before looping around as the road rises up to Breedon on the Hill. Going into the final miles, riders had another sharp climb up to the finish.
Under-23 rider Michael Gill (EMC Cycling) led the charge for second clocking 20-45 while Leon Wright (Race Hub) took third a further 10 seconds behind.
“It was quite a good day but I wasn’t expecting that result as I thought Leon (Wright) would be the favourite,” said Mead.
“It was a triangle course which was particularly draggy out of one of the villages. I thought I would be close to the course record but wasn’t sure exactly what it was.
“It’s a tricky course where you have to gage your effort and it must have been a decent day to get that time.”
Lauren Creamer, aged 27, from Birmingham rode to a convincing victory by over two-and-a-half minutes in the women’s event.
The Brotherton Cycles rider who finished second in the Coalville Wheelers 10 in March – and on the same course – went 23 seconds faster on this occasion to clinch victory.
Sally Maitland (Peak Road Club) took second in 26-06 while Amy Walls (Race Hub) finished third a further 30 seconds behind.
