After a series of podium finishes and a 21st place finish in the RTTC National Circuit Race Championships last weekend, Ross Walton took a fine victory in the 50-mile Yorkshire RC event held in Dishforth on Sunday. Kirsty Bramley topped the women’s podium.
The GS Metro rider racked up back-to-back runner-up prizes in the Ferryhill Wheelers CC and Houghton CC 10-mile events back in April but showed his quality over the longer distance here, getting the better of a strong field to take the victory.
The 31-year-old completed the course in 1:49.08 – 26 seconds quicker than second-placed rider Stephen Ayres of Bronte Wheelers.
Ayres has also enjoyed some top-three success this season with a win in the VTTA North Lancs and Lakes 12.3-mile event and third place in both the Harrogate Nova CC 15 back in March and the Drighlington BC 25 in May.
Here, he took second with his time of 1:49.32, comfortably ahead of third-placed Drag2zero rider Keith Murray who completed in 1:52.32. It was enough to make him the fastest veteran on the day.
There was a slight south-westerly breeze across the course, scotching any chances of a course record. However, 43-year-old Kirsty Bramley of Team Swift coped with the wind well to win the women’s category in a time of 2:08.44. Helen Goldthorpe of Otley CC was second in 2:21.54.
