Youngsters Thomas Prentice and Zeb Kyffin were overall winners at the Blaydon CC two-up 18-mile time trial staged near Ponteland in Northumberland on Saturday.

Junior rider Prentice and espoir Kyffin, riding for GS Metro, clocked 38-23 for the M18 circuit, giving them the overall win by 33 seconds from Derwentside CC rivals Colin Humphrey and Chris Mather, while third spot went to another GS Metro duo in Ali Bailey and Dan Meggison, who were 1-50 behind the pace set by their young team-mates.

The event marked the start of the time trialling season in the Northumberland and Durham CA area following heavy snowfall and roadworks.

After a glorious sunny morning the heavens opened just as the first two riders were set off at 1pm, and the heavy rain persisted throughout, making the 12 degree temperatures feel a lot colder.

In other categories, the first female team was sisters Natalie Batey (Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service CC) and Jennifer Batey (Tricademy) who clocked 45-43, while the best veteran pair was Muckle CC duo Darren Williamson and Craig Haslam with 41-24.

The course starts just to the north of Ponteland town, and heads up along minor roads to the junction with the B6524, where they turn left and head down to the A696 near Belsay. Riders then continue south on that road to a finish just west of Ponteland.
