Talented juvenile rider Oliver Stockwell and veteran Christine Pout were the fastest male and female riders respectively at the Welwyn Wheelers hilly 50-kilometre time trial near Codicote in Hertfordshire on Good Friday.
15-year-old Stockwell (Welwyn Wheelers) covered the F3/50km course in 1-14-16 to take the overall win by 1-20 from Luke Clarke (TMG Horizon Cycling Team), while Danny Axford (Arctic Tacx RT) was third, another two minutes off the pace.
Pout clocked 1-37-10 to win the women’s prize, the Verulam-Really Moving rider being more than six minutes ahead of the next best female Kate Gannon.
It was a significant improvement for Stockwell, who rode the same event last Easter and clocked 1-18-06 to take seventh spot, giving him an improvement over the last 12 months of almost four minutes and six places.
The junior boys prize went to the promoting club’s own Joe Bennett (Welwyn Wheelers) who stopped the clock in 1-20-27 to finish eighth overall, while Welwyn Wheelers also had the fastest junior girl finisher in Naomi Holt who had a time of 2-04-23.
Team Corley Cycles’ Roy Chamberlain took the veterans prize with a time of 1-21-31 for ninth place overall, and was 1-34 ahead of his closest rival in that category, Tim Davies (Icknield RC).
With headquarters at the John Clements Sports and Community Centre in Codicote, the course starts on Whitwell Road in the village, before heading to Whitwell, Hitchin, Great Offley, Kings Walden, Kimpton and back.
