Stephen Vanes and Gemma Johnson powered to time-trial victories in the Birmingham Midland 10-mile event on Saturday morning. Vanes (Successcycling.co.uk) beat Tim Ashton by 22 seconds.

Vanes was the 70th rider out of the blocks from a field of 91 and went on to post a time of 20-02 which stood the test of time as the remaining 21 riders failed to eclipse it.

Second-placed man Tim Ashton (Royal Sutton CC) equalled his best finish of the season with a time of 20-24. Jon Simpkins (Drag2Zero) completed the podium in 20-43.

Gemma Johnson (Beacon Road CC) spearheaded the women’s category as she beat Lucy Davies’ (Arctic Tacx RT) earlier pacesetting time of 23-26.

Johnson went 13 seconds quicker than Davies in 23-13, leading the 35-year-old from Birmingham to her first win of the season. Jenny Simmonds (Look Mum No Hands!) came third in 23-50.

In other categories, Baden Green (Stratford CC) was the quickest juvenile with the 15-year-old crossing the line with a time of 24-29.

Quickest veteran was Jon Simpkins who placed third overall.

Steve and Rosie Croggon (Beacon Roads CC) were quickest tandem pairing on show as they powered to victory in 22-39.

Proceeds from the event went to Cancer Relief and the Midlands Air Ambulance.
