Andy Cunningham (All Terrain Cycles) and the University of Manchester CC’s Alexandra Kendall-Smith were the fastest man and woman respectively at the Weavey Valley CC hill-climb on Sunday.

Cunningham, the 28-year-old from Ilkley in West Yorkshire, clocked 5:50.9 for the 1.69-mile Brickworks climb at Pott Shrigley near Bollington in Cheshire, giving him the win by less than two seconds from Leon Wright (Race Hub) while reigning National Champion Adam Kenway (Raleigh GAC) had to settle for third, around five seconds slower than Cunningham.

And in the women’s event, 23-year-old Kendall-Smith covered the course in 8.11 to give her the win by 13 seconds from Liverpool Century RC rival Kate Giddings, while Laura Smith (Univ of Birmingham CC) was third, another 13 seconds back.

In the veterans categories, Chris Edmondson (Velotik RT) was the fastest 40-49 rider with 6-54, 12 seconds ahead of Matlock CC’s Kevin White, while Kris Bowditch (Lyme RC) was just two seconds slower third.

The over-50s category was won by Chris Myhill (Peak RC) with 6-34, while second was Stewart Gregory (Nottingham Clarion) and third James Russell (Macclesfield Wheelers). And John Flynn (Frodsham Wheelers) was top over-60 rider with 8-36.

Darren Rider (Team PB Performance) was the fastest junior with 7-06, giving him the win by 37 seconds from James Storey (SportCity Velo) with James Bottrill (Salford CC) third.

Cunningham’s victory comes after he also won the previous week’s Border City Wheelers climb, as well as winning the Yorkshire CF climb back in June.
