There were fast times recorded at the Joe Summerlin Trophy 25-mile time trial, staged by South Pennine Road Club at Etwall in Derbyshire on Saturday.
The event was staged on the A25/11 from Etwall to Uttoxeter and back, and the course record fell to New Zealander Hamish Bond (Aerocoach) with a time of 45.29 which was an impressive 1-24 quicker than his nearest rival.
Equally impressive was the performance of Nicholas Hitchens (Peterborough CC), the 49-year-old who received the Joe Summerlin Trophy as the best performance on handicap. His actual time of 54.11 gave him a handicapped time of 41-11, and he was presented with the trophy by Gail Summerlin.
Quickest female – both on actual time and handicap – was Jessica Rhodes Jones (Beacon Roads CC) who had an actual time of 53.41 and a handicapped time of 53.41.
The performance of Hamish Bond was just the latest in a string of strong performances for the two-time Olympic rowing gold medallist, who is making the transition to cycling with the aim of winning a medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
The 31-year-old was one half of the New Zealand coxless paid which won two Olympic gold medals, eight World Championships, and also broke the world record previously held by Matthew Pinsent and James Cracknell by six seconds.
This was the inaugural edition of the Joe Summerlin Trophy, which acts as a memorial to Joe who was a long-serving member of the Central District and the national CTT Board of Directors.
He worked for UK Anti-Doping and acted as liaison between UKAD and CTT. A highly-regarded man with a vast knowledge, he is missed by all he knew him.
