Tim Cartwright.

Tim Cartwright and Claire Emons were fastest male and female riders at the Newbury Road Club 15-mile time trial in Berkshire on Saturday.

Both riding for the promoting club, Cartwright clocked a course record-breaking 29.18 while Emons 35-55 for the H15/1 course near Padworth.

The event went ahead as planned, despite terrible weather conditions in the area. Whilst the event started with an abatement in the rainclouds, the event got progressively wetter with the final riders completing their race in torrential rain.

Nevertheless, there were relatively few DNSs and some exceptional performances were noted.

Firstly, a team of three riders from Lincoln Wheelers (Andy Newham, Gary Wright and Peter Holland) broke the 15-mile trike competition record to set the new bar at 1:58:59 - breaking the time of 2:01:35 set by two of the trio just three weeks prior at the CC Breckland event.

Following on from his blistering performance in the Andover Wheelers 10 last weekend, Cartwright took the win in a time of 29:18 - a new course record, and one which had only been broken just 10 minutes previously by the 2016 event winner James Boyman (Hoops Velo) who finished second with 29:27.

Boyman's time was all the more impressive given he started the year with a serious accident. Third place went to Rob Walker (Cambridge University CC) in 31:09.

Among the women, it was the home club's Claire Emons who took the win in 35:55, with Louisa Cooper (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) having a worthwhile trip up from the coast to take second place in 37:22. Anna Woodcock (Oxonian CC) finished third in 37:53.

Arja Scarsbrook (Team Echelon) was best of the veterans with a plus of +7:52, while Ian Greenstreet was just behind with +7:47. Ian, together with Tim Cartwright and Claire Emons, also took the team prize for Newbury RC.
