Both the men’s and women’s course records were broken as Chris Fennell and Bronwen Ewing were victorious in San Fairy Ann CC’s 10-mile time trial in Kent on Saturday morning.
Fennell clocked 19.36 and Ewing 22.34 to win the two main categories in the event, staged on the Q10/22 near Harrietsham.
21 and from Thanet, Thanet RC rider Fennell won by more than a minute from John Cockrill (Abellio-SFA RT), with Dean Chiddention (Abellio- SFA RT) third.
Rye and District Wheelers rider Ewing, 56 and from Hastings, was ninth fastest overall with a time of 22.34 which gave her the win by almost three minutes from Kent Velo’s Siobhan Curtis.
Fennell’s victory is the latest of many victories he has secured in open time trials so far this year. In fact he has only once been beaten, by Keith Murray in the West Kent RC 10 back in April.
Since then he has won the Kent CA 10 last weekend, the Thanet RC two-up 9.5-mile time trial and Kent CA 10 in April, while in May he was victorious in the De Laune CC 25 and Bigfoot CC 25, while he won the Kent CA 50 last month and the VTTA Kent 10 last weekend.
And Bronwen Ewing’s winning ride – which broke Jo Rowsell-Shand’s long-standing course record - is not the first of the season for her either.
Earlier in the season she was fastest female in the VTTA (Kent) 30 in March, as well as the Team Salesengine 10 and West Kent RC 10 in April. She was second woman (and first veteran woman) in the Catford CC 10 that month too.
Since then she was third veteran in the National Circuit Championships last month, as well as placing eighth overall in the National 50-mile Championships, where she was the third veteran female.
And her pursuit of fast times in set to continue, with a ride in the VTTA Kent 10 next Saturday, before she travels to South Wales to ride the Realteam.co.uk 25 on the fast Rhigos course.
