Drag2zero duo of Kieron Davies and Alice Lethbridge took victories in the National 100-mile Championship in Hampshire on Sunday.
The hot conditions saw 15 riders drop out - including scratch man Adam Duggleby - and a host of others didn’t even start.
But Davies managed to stay focussed on the task in hand to record the quickest time of the day, stopping the clock at 3:23.48 after five laps of the Lower Froyle course.
Even with the baking hot weather, Davies was in superb form and averaged just under 30mph to take the win.
He was also quicker than the last time he rode this course, when it was just the Hounslow and District CC 100 last year. That time he claimed a time of 3:27.34, 3.46 slower.
Although Davies was a comfortable winner, the competition for second place was much tougher with Charles Taylor (Team Bottrill) finishing 7.17 down on Davies in 3:31.05 to snatch it.
Mark Nulty (Glossop Kinder Velo) was just 19 seconds down on Charles. Andy Jackson of SSLL Racing took home the veteran prize, he finished fifth overall in a time of 3:37.57.
Speaking after the win, Davies commented: “It was good to be quicker than last time out on this course – that was last year although it was the championship then. It was important to keep hydrated.
“I don’t take time checks, I find them unsettling. I like to concentrate on what I’m doing and do my own thing. The 25-mile championship is the next big one. It makes a change for me, it’s pretty much a local event, just a 45-minute drive so I get to sleep in my own bed and have breakfast at home beforehand.”
For Lethbridge, who set a new competition record just a few weeks ago, it was a tough win with team mate Kate Allan pushing her all the way.
At the halfway stage, Allan was on track for matching Lethbridge’s time but Alice’s stronger finish clinched her the win, crossing the line after 3:48.14.
Allan placed second, 2.24 down on her team mate. She was comfortable on the second step of the podium with CC Ashwell veteran Jackie Field third quickest almost seven minutes down on Allan in 3:57.36.
Lethbridge said after the race: “I didn’t expect to get anywhere near that time to be honest, I think this course is probably eight minutes slower than the one I set the competition record on.
“The surface was very rough and at the halfway stage I had Kate Allan on me so I put the hammer down and took the win. I’m looking forward to the 25-mile championship now, all of the team are busy preparing for that.”
