Mark Nulty claimed a slender victory in the senior competition at the West Cheshire TTCA 10-mile event in Wales, whilst Hannah McDonald claimed the women’s prize on Sunday.
Round five of the WCTTCA series started and finished at St Asaph Business Park, travelling along the A55 to Abergele and back on the north coast of Wales, and there was a tense end to proceedings.
Nulty (Glossop Kinder Velo CC) has been in good form over a range of distances, including a win at the Chorley 10, a second-place finish at Nottingham Clarion 50 and fifth at the Anfield 100, all in the last month.
Fourth last to get his race underway, Nulty hit the front with a strong performance in a time of 19.48, a time that would see him hang on to the win as the final riders came up just short.
Last competitor to start, Ryan Morley (Royal Air Force) was just four seconds slower to take second place, with penultimate rider Thomas Brazier (Team Elite/Paul Bethell) just seven seconds further back in third.
Alan Chorley was the highest placed veteran on the day, a time of 20.47 was good enough for fifth overall for Seamons CC, defeating nearest challenger Steve Daintith (coveryourcar.co.uk) by 33 seconds.
It was a much clearer victory in the women’s competition, where Hannah McDonald powered to victory by just over a minute and a half.
In round four last weekend McDonald (Liverpool Century RC) was second woman behind Becky Lewis, but here she improved her time by a second to post 22.34.
Rebecca Holland (Chester RC) stopped the clock in 24.08 to take second whilst Claire Clementson (Wigan Wheelers CC) claimed third.
Elsewhere, Chris Mann (Marsh Tracks Race Team) took the junior prize in a time of 22.19.
