Dan Bigham (Brother NRG Pro Cycling) was crowned National Circuit Champion after the titles races were staged in Cranfield, Bedfordshire on Sunday.
Bigham was part of the Brother NRG Pro Cycling team that broke the 10-mile competition record on the V718 course earlier in the week and he also came second in the two-day Holme Valley Wheelers event on Friday and Saturday. And he was in fine fettle again here, storming round in 41.06.
It was an agonising result for second-placed Matthew Smith of Team Bottrill. He missed out on first place by just seven seconds and had to settle for the runner-up spot for the second year running after losing out to Ryan Perry last year.
Team Bottrill had two riders on the podium with Stuart Travis coming third in a time of 42.15, just over a minute slower than his team mate.
Bigham said after the event: “The run started last Sunday when I beat Kieran Davies in Wales, then the team broke the 10-mile team competition record three times on Thursday. I came second in the Holme Valley Stage Race and then this morning, I won this and then tried to ride the Nick Clark Road Race in the afternoon.
“I was really tired but I won it last year and wanted to at least try. I was 20 to 30 watts down on my usual power but I expected that. I’m still unbeaten against the clock this year though so I’m happy with that.
“I won four track titles earlier in the year but this is my first title of the year on the road. The aim now is to try the 10, 25 and 50-mile National Championships.
“Last year, I wanted road results and managed that with a few wins, including the Beaumont Trophy. I still enjoyed trials but my focus was on the road. This year, I’ve balanced it better and I’m second on the British Cycling road ranking and making progress in time trials.”
Simon Norman was the quickest veteran of the day, the Bedfordshire Road RT man finishing fifth overall in 43.02.
Just four second slower, Brett Harwood of Team Bottrill was second veteran in 43.06. Third was Peter Nicholls of Race Hub in 44.12.
The event also counted as the final round of the Classic Series, although the title had already been wrapped up. Jersey’s Jack Rebours took the men’s title and missed this race.
There was also a junior category which Joe Laverick of Banks/Catford CC Equipe won in 44.56.
Paracyclist Graeme Church rode the event representing Team Milton Keynes and completed in 1:10.33.
