Colin Ward (Essex Roads CC) took advantage of good conditions to take victory by over a minute in the Maldon & District CC 25 and with it the open course record.
The 39-year-old from Basildon clocked a winning time of 52 minutes and 46 seconds, which was 12 seconds faster than his victory in the same event last year.
Ward’s ride saw him clocking an average speed of 28.47 miles per hour on the undulating course which also contains some technical corners.
“Usually on that course it’s quite windy but because it was a Northerly wind today it wasn’t that strong,” said Ward.
“That was helpful to most riders and most people did a personal best on that course today. I’m fairly pleased with that time as I think only a couple of people have gone quicker.
“I think Alex Dowsett went faster but it was a club event so didn’t count towards the course record. This season I’m planning on riding the Tour of Cambridgeshire with the aim of riding the World Amateur Championships in France.”
The E21/25A course saw riders complete an out-and-back between Steeple and Bradwell on Sea in the opening 12 miles before completing a loop incorporating the village of Tillingham before turning for home.
On this occasion, Ward beat Richard Price (London Phoenix CC) into second who finished in 54.19, while Christopher Smith (Southend Whls) clinched third in 58.21.
Anna Dearing (Chelmer CC) won the women’s event clocking a winning time of 1:03.55.
