Jack Rebours powered to his maiden victory in the Knight Composites Classic Series round three on Sunday.
This stage of the series took the riders to Worcestershire and the hilly Great Witley course, which was also used for round three in the 2016 series.
Rebours (Ceasarean CC) has been dominant in the espoir category in this year’s series, picking up an overall third place in round one and a second-place last weekend at round two in Staffordshire.
The 20-year-old from Jersey finally made it to the top step of the podium, blitzing the 39-mile course in a time of one hour, 31 minutes and 25 seconds.
This not only gave him a winning margin of over a minute and a half, but having accrued 177 points out of a possible 180, Rebours now leads the overall standings at the halfway mark.
“To win was a bit of a surprise,” Rebours said, “I started this series hoping for some top fives but a didn’t expect to pick up a win.”
“It wasn’t too windy today and I found conditions to be really good.
“I am doing well in the overall competition, I just want to keep pushing and trying my best and see how it goes.”
Round one winner Josh Williams (Team Bottill/HSS Hire) was back on the podium, the 26-year-old from Cambridge clocked a time of 1:33.01 to finish second.
He had a mechanical problem before the start of round two and did not start, but he is still very much in contention for the overall title after this result.
Dean Robson (Northover VT/Rudy Project) completed the top three, he defeated Williams’ team mate Daniel Halksworth by a single second to take his place on the podium
Hayley Simmonds’ domination of the women’s series continued as she made it three from three with victory in Worcestershire.
The Team WNT Pro rider recorded a time of 1:40.41, that not only put her six and a half minutes ahead of her nearest challenger but would also have been good enough for seventh overall in the senior men’s race.
The 28-year-old series favourite, who is on maximum points, knows that one more win will wrap up the title for 2017.
“It was a pretty tough course today,” Simmonds said “I grew up in the area and even though I wasn’t cycling then, I remember some of the roads from drives to school.”
“I was racing in Holland on Friday and only got back at 2am on Saturday morning.
“I won a 19.7 kilometre time trial, it was very flat and very different to the course today and had to make several changes to the bike.”
Simmonds will not be racing in round four of the series next month in Glencoe, Scotland due to her participation in a UCI event in Spain.
“I will be at round five and as long as I can get a flight home from Slovenia in time, I will race round six as well, “Simmonds added.
Elizabeth Banks (Sunsport Velo CC) finished second to Simmonds, with veteran Jackie Field (CC Ashwell) third fastest woman with a time of 1:48.30.
The two-way duel in the veteran’s category between Danny Axford (Arctic Tacx CC) and Peter Nicholls (Race Hub) continued at round three of the series.
Each with one victory to their name in the opening two rounds, it was Axford who made it back-to-back victories to lead the series at the halfway mark.
A time of 1:34.54 saw him claim victory over his rival by 45 seconds leaving Nicholls to settle for second
Daryl May (Sheffrec CC) finished fourth overall, behind Simmonds who was third in the race, but completed the veteran’s podium.
Like Simmonds, Adam Robertson made it three wins out of three with another impressive display in the junior competition.
The Verulam CC rider stopped the clock on 1:38.41, to leave him on the brink of series victory with three races remaining.
At this time, all results are provisional and subject to change.
