Bickley pips Ayres over 20 miles

Richard Bickley took a home club win for the Border City Wheelers in their 20-mile event in Lazonby, Cumbria on Sunday.

The 34-year-old powered round the course in 47.41, enough to give him victory by seven seconds.

Bronte Wheelers’ Steve Ayres, 38, was just off the pace in 47.48 and despite the strong ride, he had to make do with seconds.

Veteran Niall Paterson completed the podium, the 41-year-old VC Cumbria rider 44 seconds down on Ayres.

There were good results for other throughout the field with Beacon Wheelers junior Tom Roper taking the junior prize with a seventh-place finish.

The 18-year-old managed to stay under the 50-minute mark completing the course in a time of 49.41.

Top juvenile was another Beacon Wheelers youngster, Archie Irving. The 14-year-old completed in 51.42 and he took up an impressive 15th place overall.

Helen Jackson of Kendal Cycle Club won the women’s prize with a time of 58.52 and Border City Wheelers CC veteran Carol Westmorland came second in 59.52.

Another veteran, 42-year-old Katie Lukas of Beacon Wheelers, was third woman in 1:01.54.
