Pat Wright (Paceline RT) broke the course record by more than two minutes as he took victory in the Southern Counties CU 25-mile TT in Surrey on Sunday.

The 32-year-old clocked 55.04 to take the win by 35 seconds from team-mate Rob Sharland, the man who beat him into second spot in the Farnborough and Camberley CC 10 earlier this month as well as the Redhill CC sporting 18-mile TT.

Wright also had to settle for second place in the Dorking CC East Surrey hardriders 29.9-mile event two weeks ago, but he finally got to the top step of the podium this time.

The man who beat him in the East Surrey hardriders, John Dewey held the old course record for the G25/43 at Okewoodhill, and first man to break that two-year-old mark was Sharland.

But he only held the record for nine and a half minutes before Wright came home to win the event and lower the record even further.

In the women’s event, 27-year-old Norwood Paragon CC rider Michelle Arthurs also broke the women’s course record with a time of 1:08.46, beating Alice Lethbridge’s old record from 2015 by 11 seconds.

That time gave her victory on the day by exactly two minutes from Alicia Love, the Liverpool Phoenix rider who also had to settle for second in the previous day’s 10-mile event on the same roads. Third went to Saturday’s winner, Angela Radden-Rutt (The Cycle Room) who was a further 1-12 back.

And a new course record was also set by Lincoln Wheelers’ Lez Young, who rode the course on a trike and clocked 1:20.35.
