John Dewey (Team Bottrill / HSS Hire) won the 53rd running of the East Surrey Hardriders open time trial this morning, beating the course record by three minutes and four seconds..

The event, sponsored by Exodus Travels and Destination Bike, was promoted for the first time by Dorking Cycling Club and was held on the full 29.9 mile GS/491 course for the first time since 2013, following the long-awaited completion of repairs to Flanchford Bridge.

The heavy rain that was forecast didn't materialise and Dewey, runner-up Pat Wright (Paceline RT) and third placed Liam Maybank (Twickenham CC) made the most of the fine conditions, all breaking Steve Berry's 2012 course record.

Tamina Oliver (University of Oxford CC) won the women's event in 1:19:20 with Helen Gravatt (Twickenham CC) second and Teresa Goddard (Kingston Wheelers CC) third. Oliver also took the women's road bike prize.

Benjamin Irving (Norwood Paragon) was the first junior home in a superb 1:08:15, good enough for 9th place overall, with Christopher Filewood (Oxted Cycle Club) second (and first junior road bike) and Theo Tadros (In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT) third.

Maybank also won the veterans on standard prize with a delta of +16.26: , and, with Gravatt and Martin Winter, the vets on standard team prize. Gary Brind (South Downs Bikes / Casco Europe) and Mark Smith (Crawley Wheelers) were second and third vets on standard respectively.

Wright was part of the fastest overall team of three along with his Paceline RT teammates Ayrton Pope and Rob Sharland, who incurred a two minute late start penalty because of a mechanical problem shortly before the start.

Men's road bike winner was Mark Aldred (Kingston Wheelers) with Steve Dennis (East Grinstead CC) first in vets road bike on standard.
