Youngster James Bentley powered to victory – and led Team Bottrill to a 1-2-3 in the shortened Matlock CC hilly 25 in Derbyshire on Saturday afternoon.

Temporary traffic lights in the first two miles of the scheduled AH2 course near Rowsley forced organisers to shorten the course, which started at the foot on a one in seven hill.

Heavy rain the day before gave way to intermittent sunshine during the event itself – although there was one big puddle that had not drained away on Moor Lane in Youlgrave which gave riders something to think about.

Bentley clocked 53.58 to take the win by 1-07 from previous winner Charles Taylor, while their team-mate Graham Kemp completed a clean sweep of the podium with third, almost two minutes behind espoir Bentley.

Peak Road Club placed Steve Gibson and Chris Myhill fourth and fifth respectively and they were the fastest two veterans, with Gibson covering the distance in 57.53, while Myhill crossed the line in exactly 59 minutes.

Ann Walsham (Maxx RT) was the fastest woman, covering the course in 1-09-45, giving her the win in that category by almost four minutes from Rachel Batt (Buxton CC).
