In-form Dan Evans (Team Elite-Paul Bethell Electrical) stormed to a convincing victory in the Huddersfield Star Wheelers climb of Jackson Bridge near Holmfirth in West Yorkshire on Saturday morning.
2014 national champion Evans, 35 and from Colwyn Bay, covered the 1,540-yard climb in a superb 4:07.5, but was still almost 18 seconds shy of Jeff Wright’s course record from 1994.
Evans was over 11 seconds ahead of his nearest rival in the 43rd annual Granville Sydney Memorial hill-climb, with Kieran Savage (Team B38-Underpin Racing) second, while another seven seconds back in third spot was David Huck (Lakes RC), and Matt Clinton (Mike Vaughan Cycles) was less than a second further back and narrowly missed out on the podium.
For Evans, it was just the latest in a string of hill-climb victories which have included Fibrax-Wrexham RC’s climb of the Horseshoe Pass last Sunday, as well as both stages of the Otley CC two-stage climb last Saturday, and the Exeter Wheelers event the weekend before that.
Fastest female in the Huddersfield Star Wheelers event on Jackson Bridge was Jessica Roberts (Team Elite-Paul Bethell Electrical) with 5:47.2 which gave her the win in that category by 16 seconds over Josephine Gilbet (Footon Velosport), while Helen Roby (HD Revolutions) was third.
