Drag2Zero’s Kieron Davies won Pontypool RCC/Sunwise’s Welsh 10 Championships in convincing style, clocking 18.36 to set a new course record on the popular R10/17.
The South Wales rider beat David Woodhouse (GS Henley) into second place by over 40 seconds, who recorded 19.19, with Matt Slater (Revo Racing) rounding out the podium to take third spot with 19.23.
Taking the Welsh title is another strong result for Davies, who recently finished third in the national 25 mile championships, equalling his third spot in the 2015 event.
Special mention must go to 12-year-old Joshua Tarling (West Wales RT), who took the Juvenile title with an incredible time of 22.27 in his first year of eligibility for the age category. His outstanding time was the talking point of the day.
Tarling hit the cycling press headlines in June after recording an equally impressive 4:49.14 in West Wales Cyclists’ League 100 mile time trial.
Stephanie Post’s (Onit Cycles) time of 22.27 earned her the Welsh ladies title, ahead of Crystal Spearman (Nopinz) who clocked 22.53 and Katie Price (Hereford and District Wheelers CC) with 23.45.
Bristol South CC’s Joshua Griffiths’ trip across the Bristol channel proved productive, as he clocked a rapid 21.40 to take the open Junior Welsh title.
Early riders had to deal with slightly cold conditions, with times dropping for the later riders as the temperature rose.
Weather conditions were otherwise good with just a light breeze on the fast course, which uses the A40 duel carriageway between Abergavenny and Raglan in Monmouthshire, South Wales.
