Colin Ward came within 12 seconds of the course record to win the Southend Wheelers 50 event on Sunday.
The Essex Roads man completed in a time of 1:48.10, just off the record held by Steve Dennis.
Richard Price of London Phoenix came second with a time of 1:50.38 and Oliver Mytton of Cambridge University was third, stopping the clock at 1:53.59.
It was a double win for Essex Roads with Susan Triplow winning the women’s event. Her time of 2:11.39 was enough to claim top spot.
Chelmer CC’s Mary Bower was second in 2:12.10 and Sarah Croucher of Eagle RC was third in 2:19.22.
