Ray Wilson returned from injury to pick up his first win of the season in the open category at the St Christophers Cycling Club 25-mile time trial in Renfrewshire on Sunday morning, with Margaret Mcmillan triumphing in the women’s event.

Riding for Deeside Thistle Cycling Club, Mcmillan set an unbeaten 1:01-21 to win the women’s event, while a time of 1:02-36 helped Patricia Baird to seal second spot on the podium in 1:02-36 and a time of 1:03-44 saw Fiona Davidson (Dundee Wheelers Cycling Club) to third place.

In the open category, Wilson made a comeback from six weeks out injured with broken ribs following a road race crash and led the way for a dominant GTR – Return To Life p/b Streamline team, who claimed five of the top ten positions.

A time of 50-33 saw Wilson finish clear of the field for his first success since winning at the GTR -Return To Life p/b Streamline 4-up team time trial in June and his first solo victory since winning the Deeside Thistle Cycling Club 25-mile time trial in April last year.

On his win, Wilson said: “It was glorious, a stunning day and the first time I’ve ridden that course so I think I got the best day for a while. It’s my first weekend back racing for a while and I’ve had six weeks out with broken ribs. When you’ve got the GTR armour on you’re good to go again.

“GTR are a strong team and with no Chris or Dougie there, someone else had to step up and it’s a nice change from being third or fourth!

“You miss the racing, the GTR racing banter that happens at the weekends, so it’s good motivation to get back into it. There are not many big races left so it’s important to just keep the direction now.

“Even if you’re not in good form, it’s important to turn up, thank the organisers for a good show and enjoy it.”

Runner-up was teammate Cameron Muir in 50-52, while Aberdeen Wheelers’ Chris Petrie took third spot in 51-13.

In the tandem category, 1:01-49 for John Lumley and Lorna Lumley (Ayrodynamic Triathlon Club) saw them finish top, with quickest road bike claimed by Greg Kerr (Johnstone Wheelers) in 59-28.

Riders enjoyed very calm and dry conditions on the course, with temperatures even becoming slightly warm.

This event, run on the WW25/01 course, starts on Bishopton Hill and heads westbound along the River Clyde on the A8 to Woodhall roundabout, taking the first exit for 1.5 miles then turning back, rounding Westferry roundabout and completing another lap of the circuit, finishing the second lap and heading onto Greenock Road, finishing west of the start line.
