Richard Pywell claimed his first time trial success in more than three years with victory at the Kingston Phoenix Road Club 10-mile time trial on Saturday morning, with Jackie Townsend finishing as the quickest female at the Surrey-based event.

Riding for Team Bottrill, Pywell narrowly took top spot in 20-51, just two seconds faster than runner-up Lewis Roberts (Blackspokes Race Team) in 20-53, while a time of 21-34 helped Chris Jones of Bynea Cycling Club to the final spot on the podium.

This is Pywell’s first time at the top of the standings in an open CTT event since his maiden time trial at the Newbury Road Club 25-mile time trial on the H25/1A course on May 9 2021, having contested seven more time trials since with a best finish of second at the Farnborough and Camberley Cycling Club 10-mile time trial in March 2022.

In the women’s event, Townsend was a minute clear in 27-18 for the promoting team, with Teresa Goddard (Kingston Wheelers Road Club) second in 28-18.

Elsewhere, Peter Madarasz (Team TMC) clocked 22-39 to win the 40+ category, with the winner of the 50+ group going to Chris Jones of Bynea Cycling Club in 21-34 and Adrian Blacker topping the 60+ category in 22-19 and Steven Gordon-Head (Kingston Wheelers Cycling Club) the fastest 70+ rider in 24-41.

Tony Truepenny-Phillipson of Bec Cycling Club was the quickest road bike in 22-15.

The 29 racers who completed the circuit enjoyed a beautiful, still day with blue skies, 14° temperatures and newly surfaced roads on a lot of the course.

This event, held on course G10/4, is an out-and-back circuit that starts just south of North Holmwood and heads southbound on the A24 until reaching the Clark’s Green roundabout, where riders turn and follow the route back to finish just north of the start line outside of North Holmwood.
