Angus Toms opened his 2024 season with victory at the GTR – Return to Life p/b Streamline 10-mile time trial in Scotland, while quickest female went to Beth MacRae.

Riding for Loose Cannon’s Conditioning, Toms clocked an impressive 19-31 to see off competition from GTR – Return to Life p/b Streamline pair Rob Graham and Marc Anderson, who finished second and third in 19-45 and 20-01 respectively to complete the top three.

From his five completed career open events so far, Toms now has three wins – the others coming at the Velouse Flyers 25-mile time trial in June 2022 and then at the Edinburgh Road Club hill climb in October 2023 – as well as fourth at the VC Baracchi 50-mile time trial in August 2022 and then third at Kings Lynn 25-mile time trial in April 2023.

On his win Toms said: “The event was really well organised and the course was super fast yesterday with almost no wind.

“It was my first time on a proper dual carriageway course so I took 90 seconds off my PB which is a great start to the season but I think there’s still some room to improve there.

“I’m racing the BUCS 10 next weekend which will a good test and then the Scottish Championships a few weeks after that so hope I can produce some similar performances at those.”

In the women’s event, MacRae’s time of 22-26 helped the Jadan Vive Le Velo rider to victory, with Ayrodynamic Triathlon Club’s Lorna Todd second in 25-24.

“Although it was a very cold morning, there wasn’t much wind which was nice,” said MacRae.

“I am very pleased with my time for this early in the season. I’m learning how to pace a 10 better and this is helping a lot.

My next time trial is the District Championships on the WW10/01 course next Sunday.”

This event, run on the WW10/03 course, is an out-and-back that starts opposite Eglington Country Park and follows the A78 southbound until reaching the Dundonald Camp roundabout, where riders turn and retrace the route back to finish just west of the start line.
