Road bike competitor Elliott Colyer (University of Exeter CC) came agonisingly close to breaking the course record on his way to winning the Portsmouth North End CC 25, while youth rider Betsy North (Portsmouth North End CC) won the women’s event.

Despite being delayed by traffic at one stage Colyer posted a winning time of 56-12 – just one seconds slower than Pat Wright’s course record.

Perfect conditions greeted riders as they started in Wickham before heading out and back along the A32 and B3035 to the turn at Bishop’s Waltham.

On the return leg competitors continued past the start to finish on the B2177 at Southwick.

Colyer won the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers event over 42 kilometres on his only other outing this season.

Despite narrowly missing the course record Colyer took victory by almost three minutes, with quickest time trial bike competitor and veteran Larry Wiltshire (Racing Club Ravenna) finishing second overall in 59-03.

Rounding off the overall podium position was fellow veteran Nik Allen (Team TMC) who completed the course in 59-48.

“There were really nice conditions, not too warm and no wind to notice,” said Colyer.

“It’s a good course for a positive split as out is up a false flat climb and most the climbing is in that half.

“It was my aim to go out strongly and then see how much I could hang on towards the end. I tried to use the weight advantage of my road bike on the climbs and put my power down up the climbs.

“It was a real shame that I missed the previous course record by a second as I got caught behind a van who was behind some other riders.

“I saw the course record before the event and knew it would be a good measure to go for.”

The women’s event was won by 15-year-old North who riding her first open time trial on a road bike posted a winning time of 1-16-42.

The only other women’s competitor was fellow road bike rider Charlotte Hall (Team Milton Keynes) who completed the course in 1-18-06.

Overall winner Colyer dominated the road bike category ahead of Callum Baxter (Portsmouth North End CC) in second (1-04-11) and Fraser Hughes (Audax UK) placed third (1-06-11).
