John Archibald powered to victory in the men’s National 10-Mile Championship, staged in Cambridgeshire and hosted by Hitchin Nomads CC on Saturday afternoon.

HUUB-WattShop rider John Archibald was already the 2024 national champion over 25, 50 and 100 miles as well as having won the National Closed Circuit Championship.

But his time in the 10-mile title race gave him yet another victory, 18-11 being 17 seconds better than runner-up Adam Duggleby (ADDFORM-Vive le Velo), with there being a tie for third spot between Sheffrec CC rider Thomas Lee and Piotr Zulawski (Cambridge CC) who both clocked 18-30.

In a hard-fought and close title race there were a total of 16 riders who came in under the 19-minute mark, with riders from fifth to tenth all separated by just 12 seconds.

“I was pleased with my ride, pleased with the result and pleased to close out the season with another title,” said Archibald.

“It wasn’t technically my best ride, I paced it wrongly with the headwind on the way out. I put a lot into that section so by about six or seven kilometres I felt like I had popped a bit, and the last bit was a bit of a drag.

“I was hoping to get under 18 minutes but it doesn’t really matter to me, it’s more about the win.

“Conditions were warm enough and dry, but the wind was the most notable thing with a cross-headwind. At times it was difficult just to stay in a straight line.”

The team prize went to Team Bottrill with their trio being Jake Sargent, Rob Francis and Josh Williams.

Francis clocked 18-47 for eighth spot, Sargent finished in 18-51 for ninth and Williams set a time of 18-53 for joint tenth overall.

The National Championships continue tomorrow on the same course near Cambourne, with the women’s event and the juniors competing in the morning.
