National competition record holder Hayley Simmonds sealed victory at the Verulam CC 25-mile time trial on Saturday, while Thomas Lee finished fastest in the open category.

Simmonds, riding for Doltcini O’Shea Cycle Division, clocked 50-43 to claim top prize in the women’s category ahead of Keri Parton (Team Bottrill) who finished runner-up with 54-07, while a time of 56-50 was enough to see Chantel Coetzer of Hainault RC secure third.

This was a first win of the season in the women’s category for Simmonds, who sealed victory with over three minutes to spare on her nearest competitor.

“The F2 is a very local course for me so it was a great opportunity to get a 25 in ahead of the Nationals in a few weeks time,” said Simmonds.

“This week has been hot but breezy in Cambridgeshire. Luckily yesterday morning was a little cooler, though the humid conditions made it quite tough and the headwind on the outward leg each lap was stronger than expected.

“The performance wasn’t quite as good as I had perhaps hoped, though I knew I was going into the race slightly tired from a solid training block. I’m happy with my current TT form, however, and I think it bodes well for the National 25 and closed circuit championship in August.”

In the open category Lee (Sheffrec CC) topped the standings with 47-2, ahead of Jacob Storey (trainSharp) who had to settle for second with 47-32, only eleven seconds off the pace, while Jack Levick (Rose Race Team) secured third spot with a time of 47-56.

John Watson (Hitchin Nomads CC) was the fastest competitor to complete the course on a road bike, clocking 56-28 to finish 60th overall, while Will Trevor of City RC Hull took home the prize for the quickest espoir rider in 57-17.

In the youth category, Otto Allinson (Charlotteville Cycling Club) finished in 55-32, with Cris Coxon of Brighton Mitre CC finishing as the fastest veteran in the field with a time of 48-42.

This 25-mile event, run on the F2A/25 course, starts on St.Neots road where it heads west to Caxton Gibbet roundabout upon which it performs a u-turn to head back east along the A428 to finish on the A1303 slip road.
