Joanne Rea continued her fine form with success in the women’s event at the Gosforth Road Club 12-mile time trial, while Daniel Kane finished as quickest in the open event in Northumberland on Sunday morning.
The event was noteworthy for a large female field of over 20 riders, the most assembled in the region for a non-National Championship event.
Victory went to Rea of Team Kirkley Cycles in 30-11, while Louise Burnie of Blaydon CC was second in 31-33, with Nicki Murphy (Wearside Triathlon) taking third place in 32-26.
Just missing out on the female podium in fourth place was junior Freya Johnson, from the promoting club, who set a new female junior course record of 32:50 in the process.
“I am super pleased to take the win on this one as it means I have now finished our local BAR on max points,” said Rea after the race.
“This means a lot as this time last year racing my bike again this year seemed unachievable.
“It was really extra special today that we have 20 women starting! This is brilliant for the north east and huge well done to Ali McLean for pushing this in the region.”
In the men’s event, Kane picked up his first-ever open time trial win at the 35th attempt, the Muckle Cycle Club rider posting 26-25 while a time of 26-39 helped Joshua Hodgson (GS Metro) to take second spot with Nicholas Stevenson (Wearside Triathlon) finishing the top three in 28-24.
On his win, Kane said: “I am really pleased to take the win.
“The course is a hard one to pace but I knew I needed to go out hard for the first half and then survive over the second half and push on any of the inclines so was pleased it worked out.
“Thanks to the organisers and marshals who put on a record-breaking event with over 20 females entrants.”
Lee Cuthbertson was quickest road bike in the open category in 28-38 for GS Metro, while top of the women’s road bike group was Joanne Hilton (Team VC) after finishing in 33-26.
Weather conditions were dry and sunny throughout the course with only moderate winds that contributed to fast rides from several riders.
This event, run on the M12S course, is a 12-mile looped circuit that starts just north of Stamfordham on the B6309 and heads to Black Heddon, turning left to Ingoe then left to Matfen, left to Stamfordham and finishing just before Stamfordham village.
